A: SOME BASIC FACTS

B: ALUMINIUM vs STEEL ROLLER SHUTTERS
Although Steel is generally considered to be stronger than Aluminium products, with Roller Shutters Aluminium is generally the strongest – mainly because of the extruded guides and laths which are thicker and have built-in reinforcements.
Steel rusts so it has to be hot dipped galvanised. Powder coating on top of Galvanising does not adhere very well and chips off easily
Aluminium does not rust. When powder coated has a much smoother finish and looks more like office furniture. Paint finish more durable than when on Steel
Aluminium shutters can have a shutter box 33% smaller than steel – starting at 165 mms.

Economic way of protecting larger openings
Can be fully automated providing a very easy method of opening and closing
Allows full light into the building when the shutter box is concealed

D: DIS-ADVANTAGES OF ROLLER SHUTTERS
Require Planning Permission when being fitted externally
Planners don’t generally like Solid curtain shutters BUT usually accept Perforated, Punched as well as Punched and Glazed types.
Generally more expensive than internally fitted Grilles
Thieves have more time to try to break through an external shutter as no alarms going off. With Grilles and Shutters fitted internally, the alarm will go off as soon as the glass is penetrated, providing a much better deterrent.
Require at least Annual Maintenance to conform to the Machinery Directive.
